AGEs - sugar and proteins and aging

Over a lifetime of cooking, the amount and variety of AGE-modified tissue progressively increases. High sugar levels, elevated fats (caused buy sugar and excess carbs, not healthy fats) and increased oxidative stress all act to hasten the formation of AGEs.

“Diabetics have long been known to age faster than healthy individuals.

The mechanism behind the accelerated destruction of cells, tissues, and organs observed in diabetics is called glycation, the dangerous binding of sugars to proteins. The resulting sugar-protein complex is known as an advanced glycation end product or AGE.

In the laboratory, glycation's effect on living tissues was found to be identical to the process by which meat is browned when cooked at high temperatures. Healthy proteins also turn brown in the presence of excess glucose and become functionally impaired.

Fortunately, a relative of vitamin B1 called benfotiamine protects cells and helps to prevent glycation and the accelerated aging triggered by elevated sugar levels. Used as a prescription drug in Europe, benfotiamine is available in this country as a low-cost supplement.”

Did you know that a high percentage of men and women are in the pre-diabetes stage (undiagnosed or close to pre-diabetes) because of all the sugar and starchy foods in the modern western diet (USA England and Australia) and need to make some quick ammendments? Now if you take benfotiamine and persist with this kind of diet, your results will be mixed or your health can suffer in other ways. But along with an improved diet, this is what I suggest – not prescribe:

Even though benfotiamine supplements can be found in many natural-food stores and in stores specializing in dietary supplements. They may trigger certain side effects such as upset stomach and a decrease in blood pressure in some people.

The best way is to include foods that are found to naturally contain this substance in your diet – they are garlic, onions, shallots and leeks, because many supplements contain a synthetic form of benfotiamine. You could however consider a quality Odourless Garlic supplement. This is a safer way to go because the supplement is new on the market whereas Garlic supplements are well established containing other beneficial properties as well, that are known to promote the health of many who take them over a reasonable time

(allow 2-3 months at least).

There are safer ways to go like Ginko-biloba that benefits your brain as well. One of the most common skin-related side effects of extended aspirin use is bruising. Bruises are caused when capillaries are damaged and allow bloodto leak visibly underneath the skin. Bathing and showering regularly is recommended for good personal hygiene. However, bathing and showering too much, however, can have a potentially damaging effect on your skin. The same applies for really hot baths and showers.
