What is happening? New country of origin food labels are coming

Australia's food labels are getting clearer From July 1 the Australian Government is introducing new food labels to make it clearer where the products you buy are produced, grown, made or packed. Easy to understand labels will tell you at a glance where a product comes from, so you can make a clear and informed decision. Find more information here on what you can expect to see, why the labels are changing, when you will start seeing it and what different labels mean.

Food labelling is about to become clearer.

From 1 July 2016, the Australian Government is introducing new food labelling. Food businesses will begin applying easy to understand labels which will tell you at a glance where your food is grown, produced, made or packed. The labels will also tell you what percentage of the ingredients come from Australia.

The new labels will give you the information you need to quickly and easily make informed decisions about the food you buy for you and your family.

Why is it happening? You want to make informed decisions

For many years, Australians have been demanding changes to origin claims on food labels. You want them to be clearer, more meaningful, and accurate.

Up until now, country of origin labelling has often been unclear. It was hard to know the difference between descriptions like ‘made in’ and ‘product of’. The new labels will be easier for you to understand, so you can make a quick, yet informed, decision in the supermarket aisle, at the fruit and veg shop, or the market.

When is it happening? New labels apply from 1 July 2016

Businesses selling food in Australian retail stores will need to begin applying the labels from 1 July 2016.

There is a two year transition period, giving businesses time to manage the change while still selling their existing stock. This means that over time, you will see more and more labels appearing on products.

Any food products that still have the old labels at the end of the transition period can still be sold until the end of their shelf-life. Food labelled after the end of the transition period must follow the new rules.

These three labels will have the kangaroo symbol, text and a bar chart which show the percentage of Australian ingredients.

The US Food and Drug Administration has taken the first step toward eliminating the use of partially hydrogenated oils — the main dietary source of artificial trans fat — in processed foods, labelling them unsafe. The agency recently made a preliminary determination that the oils “Are not generally recognised as safe for use in food” and should be eliminated, FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, MD, told reporters

Medpage reports that FDA figures show trans-fat consumption declined from about 4.6 grams per day in 2003 to about 1 gram a day in 2012 but many products — such as some desserts, microwave popcorn, and frozen pizza — still contain trans fat.

So it’s up to us to avoid eating this rubbish and educating our kids about the risks involved with eating a

junk food diet. Remember – most diseases are preventable with a healthy diet; having the right levels of nutrients for your individual requirements and avoiding toxin exposure via your diet; what products you use on your body and what you are exposed to in the environment.

Perfluorinated Chemicals

PFCs are so pervasive and resistant to biodegration, 99 percent of Americans carry traces of them in their bodies. The chemicals have been linked to health issues like kidney disease, thyroid disease and low birth weight in infants.

How to Avoid Them: Avoid using nonstick cookware, and forgo furniture, clothing and carpet that comes with water-resistant coatings.
